feh AnonymousMy single biggest gripe with this movie is the lack of characterization the boy gets. He swings from empathetic to sociopathic, regretful to remorseless, discreet to ostentatious, and generally feeling to unfeeling with absolutely no rhyme or reason. There is no illustrated push or pull between who he was with who he's becoming as a result of puberty and / or mind alteration. We have no idea what he cares about, as his concerns appear to be inconsistent between every minor conflict. Because he's effectively invulnerable, inconsistently written, and bluntly dishonest on top of that, the film lacks any sense of viewer emotional investment. Are we actually supposed to believe him when he says he wants to do good? Because there's support for that: he lets his mom hug him and genuinely sounds pained when she betrays him. And he was raised an intelligent and conscientious child, so he should understand what is "good". He demonstrates a clear grasp of social values as well, even when "possessed", when he lies about getting bullied after being invited to play soccer. But not once does he ever use his powers for good. He has no consistency, not even in his possible internal conflicts, and that alone shatters any merit this movie could have had.2019-08-17 05:08
