    Los Angeles Times

The sea battles are absolutely epic, more realistic and thrilling than John Woo's 2008 "Red Cliff" or even Peter Weir's 2003 "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World."

    New York Times
    August 14, 2014

The film is already a hit in South Korea, but it lacks the character interest that might make it connect elsewhere.

    July 30, 2015

There's a commanding sense of scale and heft on screen; one achieved without sacrificing coherency or personal stakes.

    Film Journal International

A huge box-office success overseas, this epic-in-every-way impresses through its sheer mass and volume.
