The Land of Steady Habits (Au pays des habitudes)
TrailerFeeling trapped in the stifling, wealthy enclave of Westport, Connecticut, Anders Hill (Ben Mendelsohn) retires from his job in finance and leaves his wife (Edie Falco) in the hopes that it will renew his lust for life. However, he's quickly faced with the startling reality of his choices; he spends his days looking for things to decorate his empty shelves, sleeping with strangers and feeling terribly lost. Missing his ex-wife and on the outs with his troubled 27-year-old son (Thomas Mann), Anders befriends a drug-addicted teen (Charlie Tahan), sending him down a path of reckless and regrettable behavior. His shameful actions cause him to question who he is as a father and, ultimately, who he is as a person.Actors: Charlie Tahan, Ben Mendelsohn, Connie Britton, Thomas Mann, Edie Falco, Elizabeth Marvel, Josh Pais, Michael Gaston, Natalie Gold, Victor Slezak, Sarah Wilson, ...»Director: Nicole HolofcenerCountry: United StatesDuration: 98 minQuality: HDRelease: 2018IMDb: 6.20 CommentsSort By- Newest

Critic Reviews of "The Land of Steady Habits (Au pays des habitudes)"
Los Angeles TimesSeptember 13, 2018Laying it all out with a piercing authenticity, Holofcener makes us hope that the wait till her next feature is not quite so long.
indieWireSeptember 13, 2018The decision to spend a little time on a lot of different characters results in a splintered story that muddles - rather then clarifies - its protagonist's roundabout journey back to himself.
San Francisco ChronicleSeptember 13, 2018Really bad decisions are made, people lie, no one convincingly grows. Lest this be taken as biting commentary, the music, stilted dialogue and epilogue assure us it's in earnest.
Entertainment WeeklySeptember 13, 2018As the tone wobbles between absurdity and tragedy, it also starts to shift toward something deeper and more bittersweet than mere midlife ennui.
TheWrapSeptember 13, 2018No detail ever seems to go unnoticed in Holofcener's world, and viewers could spend the entire running time simply admiring her powers of surveillance.
New York TimesSeptember 13, 2018The performances have sufficient grit - and the writing has just enough polish - to make "The Land of Steady Habits" feel unpredictable and fresh.
The PlaylistSeptember 13, 2018Holofcener understands human behavior and her sharp, well-observed Land Of Steady Habits is as lovely and near amazing as anything she's made thus far.
Slant MagazineSeptember 13, 2018Nicole Holofcener's The Land of Steady Habits often suggests the film that American Beauty might have been if the latter had been pruned of its smug hysteria.
GuardianSeptember 13, 2018A droll, sad and relentlessly truthful study of suburban ennui...
AV ClubSeptember 13, 2018In the well-trod territory of fiction about rich men in self-induced emotional crises, the film stands as a worthy, if not exactly groundbreaking, addition.
Hollywood ReporterSeptember 13, 2018If the center holds, it's thanks to the enthralling performance by Mendelsohn, one of the most compelling character actors of any era.
